Coach Sandy (Dubuc) Paon, AHS 1977 - Sandy earned
eleven varsity letters during her four years at AHS. A seven time Conference
All Star, Sandy was named the Pawtucket Times Student Athlete of the year
from AHS in 1977. A pioneer in winter track for females at the school. Sandy
is also credited with breaking the long standing sex barrier in the weight
room at AHS. As a junior Sandy established a new state record in the shot
put for the winter season with a throw of 36' 8 1/4". Ranked first in New England
in 1976 Sandy was named a High School All American. As a Senior, Sandy broke
her own record and set the winter track shot put record which still stands
today at 38" 10". In spring track Sandy set two other records: the shot put
at 40" 5" and the discuss at 113' 9 1/4". Participating on the swim team two
years, Sandy established a new freshman record in springboard diving for
boys and girls with 131 points. Switching to field hockey as her fall sport
in her junior year, Sandy recorded six shutouts as a goalie in 1975 and
followed with a school record ten shutouts as a senior. The 1976 field
hockey team went 8-0-2 as it was the first in the school's history to
advance to the quarter finals of the state regional playoffs. After a
shutout victory in the first round of the journey, Sandy kicked away 23
shots in regulation of the quarter final game before one slipped past her in
a sudden death loss. Her play qualified her for a nomination to the Boston
Globe All Scholastic Team. Sandy and her husband Paul have two children,
Paul Michael and Kristyn. Sandy and Paul are very active within the Cystic
Fibrosis Organization as they work, hope and pray for a cure to the disease
which their daughter has. Currently Coach Paon has come home to
Attleboro High School were she is giving back by coaching today's AHS
athletes in the very same sport she did so well in as a student herself. |
