Sacrifice of AHS track team

Hello all Turtles

Ray Nelson has just called me and asked me to let you know that Martin Tighe had an episode about 6 hours into he 24 hour quest and passed out.  He was taken to Sturdy Memorial Hospital and is undergoing tests at this time.

Sadly his quest for the 24 hour record is off for now so if you had planned to go support him, plans have changed for now

I’m sure Ray will update you later.

Well, the bottom line is that Martin is ok. His 'episode' happened after the 6 hour point, and from what I know he was having an acidic reaction to the food he was taking in - as he was trying to keep his body well-fueled and energized.

He experienced nausea and an eventual drop in his heart rate which lead to his passing out……. He was taken to Sturdy Memorial Hospital where he underwent tests - his electrolytes were out of whack and he was treated for that, and was OK. One of his concerns though, not for himself but for us, was to make sure that word was spread about this so that no one would show up to run or volunteer at the event. As far as I know, those turtles who were planning to participate were notified.

Update-

Bruce Garber, the project manager for "GO THE DISTANCE", filled me in on 'the rest of the story…….' regarding Martin and rally of support that occurred for Martin this morning at Attleboro High School

I will give more details later, but for now I want you to know that channel 6 (and other news media as well) covered and unexpected and unplanned rally,  and interviewed Martin and other key players. It is expected to air on channel 6 today at 6 pm, and again at 11 pm

The 'rally' stemmed from a student of the Network Program who was so inspired by Martin - not just for all his world records, but for his spirit of achievement and spirit and positive attitude of overcoming adversity - and belief in oneself and taking that belief to high levels of achievement….

She knew that Martin's goal was to reach 160 miles in 24 hours and establish a new WR - of course, as you know, that was not meant to be on this particular weekend, but  Stephanie Martin's student came up with the idea to come together as a 'team' and make the achievement for Martin.

The goal was for the Attleboro high school students to take turns running on the 3 treadmills, and to run the mileage for him!!!  Martin had reached 40.55 in 6 hours, so the attempt was to run 120 additional miles to make the record !!!!!

The story is about the sacrifice that the AHS track team made, without hesitation, to make that achievement happen. Martin and others who spoke took and were interviewed took the opportunity to thank the many people and groups that supported his quest…………such as us.

So - tune in at 6 or at 11 pm to CHANNEL 6 for the coverage………
